Is your workstation set up right for you?

The UK loses 6 billion pounds in lost production each year to work related musculoskeletal disorders caused by poor working practices and therefore ultimately preventable. The Health and Safety Work Ordinance 1987 requires that all employers, so far as reasonably practicable, ensure the health, safety and welfare at work of their employees.

Workstation Assessments by the Island Posture Centre

Ensuring a good work station set up and providing postural guidance is vital for the prevention and management of pain and injury in the workplace The aim of the assessment is to identify and analyse any risk factors which may cause health problems or reduce work performance.

Risk factors may be related to:

• Posture
• Design of the work area
• Design of equipment

Benefits of a Workstation Assessment

  • Compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Reduce absenteeism by addressing MSD (Musculoskeletal Disorder) associated with workstation posture
  • Reduced time off work should offset any costs of equipment required
  • Training and guidance to user on best practice
  • Increase health and well being
  • A record of the assessment and actions will provide an audit trail to assist with possible compensation claims or legal action in the future.

The Assessment

As we are all individuals, each assessment is tailored to specific requirements. The user is provided with a pre-assessment questionnaire approximately one week before the appointed time of the assessment. Depending on the reply to the questionnaire, the ergonomic consultant will spend 45 minutes to an hour per user. Usually 5 assessments can be carried out per day. A report will be produced listing any problems which were identified by the assessor. It will also provide suggestions for any changes related to work equipment i.e. chair, mouse, keyboard and the workstation layout.

We can also undertake an ergonomic vehicle assessment to determine if a vehicle is suitable for the driver. For more details please email or call 07781 146007.

Why use an independent assessor

An experienced ergonomic assessor can give a more holistic assessment and practical advice to individuals with specific needs such as back ache, WRULD (Work Related Upper Limb Disorder), RSI and/or underlying medical issues.
